John Lewis

Today I got a call back from Emily who said it would be ok for our group to film the make up department at John Lewis. Emily also said that we could interview a make-up artist, we have arranged this for Thursday.

Hairdressers - Take Two

Today me, Michaela and Jenny went back to film my uncle Steven at his hairdressers. We filmed him in both mid-shot and close-up so we could have two perspectives. After filming our interviews we also did a variety of cut away shots.

Capturing Footage

Today me, Michaela and Jenny started to capture the footage that me and Michaela had shoot of my uncle Steven at the hairdresser. However after watching it back we realised that we could not use this footage as he was not framed correctly and the sound was very tinny. We have arranged to do the interview again tomorrow.

John Lewis

Today I called Emily from John Lewis' marketing team to see if she had an answer for me on whether it would be possible to film the make up department. I was told that I would have an answer by tomorrow.

Liverpool - Take Two

Today me and Michaela went back to Liverpool to re film our Vox pops that had gone wrong. We had some good answers but there were not as many people willing to answer as last time. We also filmed some cutaways of shop names and products in boots before we got kicked out as we were not allowed to film inside.

Hairdresser

Today me and Michaela went to film my uncle Steven who is a hairdresser the interview was shot in mid shot and we had to do several takes due to some answers not being as detailed as they could of been.

John Lewis

Today I called both John Lewis and Debenhams to ask about filming their make-up departments. Debenhams said that it was not a possibility however John Lewis said it would be ok and they would get back to me with a date and time for early next week.

Interviews

Today I, Michaela and Jenny started logging and capturing the footage we had filmed from the week before. While capturing the footage we realised that some of the Vox pops we had filmed had been filmed wrong as Michaela was standing on the wrong side while asking the questions, so we will have to go back and re film them at some point. Today I also arranged two interviews one with a hair dresser and one with a fitness fanatic both for tomorrow.

Filming in Liverpool

Today me and Michaela went to Liverpool to film our Vox Pop answers. The Vox Pop questions we choose are 'Who has your ideal body type?', 'What are your ideal features of a person?', 'Are plus size people beautiful?' and 'Would you ever consider plastic surgery?'. To film our Vox pops we went round various locations in Liverpool - including Liverpool ONE and the Metquarter. While out filming me and Michaela noticed that the channel 4 show 'Embarrasing bodies' were getting ready to film so we asked the production manager if it would be possible to arrange an interview with one of the doctors. Helen the prodution manager said it would be ok so we arranged a time to come back and film. While waiting we went to both John Lewis and Debenhams to see if it would be possible to film make-up counters. Both John Lewis and Debenhams said we would have to phone the managers. When we came back we interviewed Christian Jessen.

Planning

This a storyboard that my group drew for our opening title sequence for our documentary, it lasts for 20 seconds.

These are the single frames my group drew for the interviews that we will conduct in the first five minutes of our documentary; Jane who had a gastric band inserted, a doctor, a nail technician, a hairdresser, a gym obsessive, a male who is obsessed with fake tan and a drag queen.

These are the interview questions we wrote for each of our interviewees, some questions below we did not use in our first five minutes but were in the inital plan. The reason we have not used some of these questions is that they would only have closed answers.

Questions for the nail technician
Tell me about your job.
How long have you been a nail technician for?
What made you want to be a nail technician?
Do you think your appearance is important in this line of work?
On average how many people do you give beauty treatments to a day?
What’s the most popular beauty treatment?
Do you have boys come in and get beauty treatments as well as girls?
Why do you think people come and get beauty treatments?

Questions for the sunbed shop worker

How long have you worked here for?
Throughout the years in working here do you think the use of sunbeds has risen or fallen?
Do both men and women come in to use the sunbeds on a regular basis?
Do you think that the number of males who come into the shop has risen or fallen since you first started working here?
How many minutes does the average person go on the sunbed for?
Do you think the people who come in to use the sunbeds look like their appearance is a big factor in their life?
What does the crazy fit machine do? Do a lot of different ages use it?
The people you have seen use them on a regular basis; do they look any different from when they first started using them?

Questions for Jane who had the gastric band fitted

Why is it that you wanted a gastric band fitted?
How long did it take you to decide to get a gastric band?
Did you feel pressurised by society to change your body image?
Do you think that since having the band fitted you are seen in a different way by other people? If so in what way?
Would you recommend this procedure to others?

Questions for the Doctor

Would you recommend this procedure?
What does this procedure entail?
Are there any risks with this procedure?
On average how many people ask for a gastric band each year?
Apart from a gastric band what other methods would you recommend to lose weight?

Questions for the hairdresser

How long have you been a hairdresser for?
What made you want to become a hairdresser?
Do you think appearance is important in your line of work?
On average how many people come in for a haircut a day?
Since the credit crunch have people been coming to the hairdressers less frequently?

Questions for the male obsessed with fake tan

Would you say that your appearance is important to you? If so why?
How long does it usually take you to get ready before a night out?
What is your usual routine to get ready?
Why do you get a spray tan?
How often do you get a spray tan?
Why do you prefer a spray tan to a sun bed or sun shower?
Do you think there is a negative stigma attached with a male getting a spray tan? If so why do you think this?

Questions for the drag queen

Tell me about your job, what does it entail?
What or who introduced you to this line of work?
When was the first time you dressed up like a woman and why?
Do you feel more confident whilst dressed up than you do when you are in male clothes?
What is your favourite woman's outfit to wear?
On a regular night how long does it usually take you to get ready?
Do you wear make up every day?
Where do you buy your make up products from?
Do you get male or female make up?
Are you in a relationship?
Does your partner mind that you dress up or do they not have a problem with it?
Would you say there is a negative stigma attached with being a drag queen? If so why do you think this is?

These are the questions which were in the orignal running order but since we re drafted it they no longer feature in the first five minutes.

Questions for the make up artist

Tell me about your job.
How long have you been a make up artist for?
What made you want to be a make up artist?
Do you think your appearance is important in this line of work?
On average how many people do you give makeovers to a day?
Do you have boys come in and get makeovers as well as girls?
Why do you think people come and get makeovers?

Questions for a Gym person (male & female)

How often do you go the gym?
What exercises do you do when you go the gym?
Do you take any exercise supplements?
Why do you feel the need to go the gym?
Do you have an ideal shape/figure that you want to achieve from coming here?

These are the five vox pops questions which we will film for our documentary to see which one we like the best.

Which celebrity has your ideal body shape? - this will be filmed by New Look in Liverpool One

Do you think plus size women are still beautiful? - this will be filmed by the fountains in Liverpool

Would you get plastic surgery? What would you get done? - this will be filmed by the Metquarter

Would you say the person in this picture (Pete Burns) is beautiful? - this will be filmed by Primark

Running Order

This is my groups running order of our full documentary, the section highlighted in light blue is our first five minutes which we will be producing. The documentary is exactly 24 minutes as it will be broadcasted on channel four.

Janes Interview

Today me and Michaela went to Poulton to film Jane. A woman who had recently had a gastric band operation. The interview went well and Jane’s answers were full and very detailed however we had to film it several times due to interruptions and framing issues but we fixed them and the interview went well. Jane has also agreed to give us before and after photographs which we could possible use in our documentary.

Drag Queen

Today I was given the number of a drag queen from my uncle Steven. I have tried to contact him to see if it would be possible to interview him and have had no luck so far. I will try later in the week.
